Knowing Jesus

Knowing Jesus

Luke 5:4-11 (NLT)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” …Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

This passage tells us about the day that Peter discovered three important factors for living a life that matters: know who Jesus is; come to grips with what you are like; and accept and receive the way Jesus resolves those two.

Despite Peter’s shortcomings and shortsightedness, Jesus had just exercised His Lordship to perform a powerful miracle right in the wheelhouse of Peter’s professional expertise—his fishing hole. The miracle demonstrated that Jesus was Lord over nature, over Peter’s business and over his life.

Peter was saying, “I don’t deserve to be in Your presence.” Jesus was saying, “No matter. I want to be present in your life, because not only do I care about you, I care about everyone around you. So now that you know that, let’s go fishing. I know a great spot!” The Lord reached right through Peter’s weakness to touch him with His presence and bless his business with His power because He was preparing him for a much bigger “catch.” He wants to do the same for you today!

Pray this way: Father God, I repent of my shortcomings and shortsightedness. I acknowledge and repent of all my sins. Thank You that despite all my mistakes and every weakness that I have, You still want to lead me and bless me, and transform everyone in my sphere of influence. In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Have a blessed day!
